It often just takes one person, or an inconsiderate action, or an unacceptable claim, to cause problems for everybody.
The Wellness Industry, of which I and hundreds of my colleagues proudly represent, has recently come in for criticism because of one person. And this, despite the fact…..the proven fact….that millions of people throughout the world are benefitting enormously from the wisdom of the ages which we have restructured in our efforts to reverse the dreadful effects of modern living on our lifestyles, our diets and our relationships.
The Wellness Industry is based on being complementary to other forms of health treatment, but we take our cues from a simpler dictum….that exercise, rest, proper nutrition, hydration, correct breathing and more, can rebalance the body and make it fit healthy again.
We do NOT pretend to be what we’re not. If you have a disease or medical condition, we’ll immediately refer you to a doctor. We’re practitioners in preventative health and wellness care. We don’t provide curative care. Our aim is to reduce the risk of the development of diseases, or ease those conditions caused by your body being abused by bad food, bad posture, lack of exercise and the thousand problems of the flesh.
Wellness is all about the long-term wellbeing of a client, and not the short-term cures which are needed when illness and disease strike.
So who, precisely, is this person who has recently caused us, in the Wellness Industry, so many problems. Her name is Belle Gibson, and she claimed that her diet and nutrition, cured her cancer.
Not only has she had to admit that she never had cancer, but she has done untold damage to the confidence of men and women in the Wellness Industry, our clients, and perhaps even in the mindset of people suffering from cancer who hoped that there was a cure when their doctors had done all they could.
Her actions were despicable, and the fact that she cried on television and begged for forgiveness, has done little to overcome the pain which she has caused.
So here are some thoughts from your friend, Patricia…..
According to the Mayo Clininc, one of the world’s great medical research institutions, Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occurred together
Like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist line and abnormal cholesterol all these increase the risk of ugly diseases like cancer, stroke, diabetes etc.mAn aggressive life style change can possibly delay or even prevent the development of serious health problems.
You are unique and what might work for some people might NOT work for you! Under different circumstances- Like stress levels affect us differently.
So I urge you to learn to listen to your own body regardless of what ‘treatment you follow’ but always follow a good doctor’s advice
It is also true that the Wellness Industry promotes good nutrition to foster great health!
Don’t let an ‘Apple, full of pesticides, that looks good’ be the determining factor on how you choose to take care of your health!
Belle Gibson was so wrong in doing what she has done that it reminded me of the Marlboro commercial so many people fell-for and took up smoking. Why? Because the commercial looked peaceful and outdoors and healthy and full of harmony- and yet the cruel reality of the sound of the cough of a smoker is devastatingly painful!
